Title

Matthew`s bat experiment.

Problem Scenario

Broad Question

which bat hits further a skinny bat or a fat bat.

Specific Question

does the diameter of the bat affect how far i hit the ball.

Hypothesis

The diameter will affect how far the ball goes.

Potential Problems And Solutions

The bat could break, get a new bat

Safety Or Environmental Concerns

get hit with bat, get hit with ball

Experimental Design

Number Of Trials

2 bats 1 skinny 1 fat bat

Background Research

Does the weight of the batter effect how the ball goes

Robert Adair has done work on looking at the hitter's weight and how far different batters hit the ball the result was the heavier batter hit the ball farther then the skinny batter.
That's why Shane Victorino of the Philadelphia Phillies 180 pounds will never be able to hit the ball farther than an Albert Pujols 230 pounds , it's the difference between 180 pounds and 230 is a home run!!

Batters know from experience that there is a sweet spot on the bat, about 17 cm from the end of the barrel, where the shock of the impact, felt by the hands, is reduced to such an extent that the batter is almost unaware of the collision. At other impact points, the impact is usually felt as a sting or jarring of the hands and forearm, particularly if the impact occurs at a point well removed from the sweet spot.

Detailed Procedure

Step.1 buy a tee and a couple of balls and a fat bat a skinny bat
Step.2 put the ball on the tee and hit the ball
Step.3 measure how far the ball went then collect the data

Data Analysis

Conclusion

My Conclusion was that my specific question which was does the diameter of the bat affect how far i hit the ball and it did.

Discussion

My findings were that the fat bat was good at hitting long fly balls. The skinny bat was good at hitting line drives. The wind may have been a factor with both bats because it was a windy day. people could use this information for if they are playing a baseball game with 2 different bat choices they would use the fat bat if they read about my science fair project.i think i could have made the experiment better if i did more trials with my experiment like 10 or 15 more i think it would have shown a more wide range of data then only hitting the ball 10 times with each bat.

Benefit to Community and/or Science

this would benefit the community because if you were playing a game with two bat choices you would use the fat bat.

Abstract

my question was does the diameter of the bat affect how fr the ball goes. my hypothesis is that the diameter of the bat will affect how far the ball goes. my back ground research is the weight of the batter affects how far the ball goes and it was proven by a guy named Robert Adair . He showed that Shane Victorino 180 pounds will not hit the ball farther then prince fielder 230 pounds
because of the weight of the batter. my procedure was to hit the ball off the tee and measure to see how far the ball goes. my results was that the diameter of the bat does effect how far the ball goes. my discussion is that the fat bat is good at hitting long fly balls and the skinny bat is good at hitting short line drives.
